Allow me to introduce myself…..
Hi, I’m Tony Woodward and I’m a runner for Notts AC in the fortunate position of being supported by Phil and Running Form.
My sporting background is originally from football and ran the occasional 10k race whilst trying to keep fit during the off season. During my time at university despite all good intentions, exercise was limited. After giving up football the weight started to creep on and after stepping on the scales one day I decided enough was enough and I started to run for weight loss. I then decided to (stupidly!) set myself a challenge of running a marathon and signed up for the Berlin marathon in 2012. Being overweight and unfit, the build-up for this wasn’t straight forward but I made it over the finish line in 3:58:04. Off the back of this I decided to join my first running club, Desford Striders.
Fast forward year I returned to Berlin crossing the finish line in 2:58:04, exactly an hour faster! Securing a “Good for Age” entry for London, I’d certainly got the running bug now but I wanted more. I then set my sights on a Championship Entry for London. This coincided with a switch of running clubs to Hermitage Harriers and a new target of a sub 75 minutes at the 2014 Robin Hood half marathon was set, and I finished in 1:13:48!
January 2015 saw the start of my close working relationship with my coach, Mark Perry at Optimal Running. The target then became a sub 2:30 marathon, unfortunately falling short in 2:32:08. Plenty of running and race in between but I returned to London again a year later and fell short again with 2:32:17, nearly exactly the same time, despite feeling much stronger and fitter. This target still remains and is the toughest one to crack.
2017 was certainly a year to forget, a non-running related lower back injury hampered my London marathon training. I managed to recover in time to run and “enjoy” but not race, which I very much did. The recovery was still ongoing with the focus then switching to the Notts 10 road race but two weeks prior to the race I sustained a fractured ankle whilst taking part in a research project at Loughborough University, essentially writing off the rest of the year for me running wise. A long, hard and bumpy journey ensued with my rehab but I did my best to stay focused and determined to come back stronger. I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t easy and at times negative thoughts of giving up crept in but I was able to ignore the “chimp” and eventually was able to return to full training at the end of September.
